A kinetic formulation of extreme events.

Cluster dynamics is a tendency of certain systems with huge number of components to organise themselves in small groups (clusters), which behave independently for random intervals of time. The decomposition breaks with the sudden appearance of a giant cluster, in a transition characterised by critical indices and universal behaviour. This is used in applications to predict shocks in complex systems e.g. extreme socio-economic events, or fractures in the lithosphere. Using a kinetic limit, we shall provide an analytic formulation in terms of elementary particle dynamics.
